Another approach would be to put the dye in and find the leaks yourself, once you get the parts replaced/fixed take it in to have it vacuumed down and refilled.

We had a 2000 Dakota. That model dodge dakotas have a BAD issue with the evaporator cores corroding and leaking. It's due to a screwed up design on the drain hose. Dodge wouldn't warranty the problem when it started happening. They would hand you the correct drain hose deal, then say "sorry".

Lots of folks have had the problem.

Ok...the up side. If this is what it is, the parts aren't terribly expensive.

Now...the down side. If this is what it is, you have to pull the complete dash to change the evaporator. It sucks. I suggest if you do this, change the heater core at the same time and use GOOD parts...cause you will NOT want to do it again..LOL.

Dealer wanted like 1300 buck labor to do'm. You can do it in a couple of easy days if you have the patience. Lots of Posts about it on the dodge dakota forums.

Find the leak, dye, even soap bubbles, since it's already has air, pump compressed air and lot of time if it's a big leak you can hear it, use bubbles or dye to confirm and replace parts, of course vacuum and refill, no biggie

Dodge also didn't care about the brand new dakota trucks with front brake rotor warpage problems....Argh.

ALL Mopars do this apparently...it sux. I've ha the issue on vehicles made in the 90's and the 2000's

I second the dye test and run a lamp all over the condenser coil and the tubing.

Yes...a lot of times it is just a bad o-ring or schrader valve

Haven't fixed it yet. T341tup looked at it yesterday and from what he saw it is leaking from the compressor. hopefully that is the only place it is leaking and that makes it an easy fix.
