I have a Tundra (not an SUV per your req) and I love it. Wife has a Seqouia and the space is great. My daughter bought an FJ Cruiser Saturday and I had to sit sideways in the backseat. With all three your getting under 20 MPG so that kills that per your requirements. Honestly one of my kids has a WRX and the other a Legacy. Subaru makes some fine machinery! The new Forrester would be top on my list that seems to meet all your specs.
SUV, 4X4, 25mpg's, lots of leg room for under 35K has a very short list. The only thing I can really think of close would be an explorer. I'm not sure how much room in the back or if they're under 35K.
I've been getting an outrageous 19.9 in mine. Well as long as I stay off the highway. Then it drops down to about 12. Got to love the aerodynamics of a brick.
