I have a henry and a marlin with plastic ones.. an old beater 22 with aluminum. I can't imagine why a plastic would not work. At least until you find someone to machine you an aluminum or steel one. seems like the inside end doesn't have to be a ball either, but could be a flat rim. ball would maybe slide up and down better but the ones on mine are all just a collar i think.. but on 3d printer it would be easy either way.
that said, i have 3d printer, and can design my own parts.
so if you can get me the dimensions i can make you one out of plastic. Take very little time.

I do have a follower I have modified that almost works. The issue it is does not have the ball on the end so it does not have the travel needed. I'm pretty sure it could be used as a reference otherwise though.

Yes it can. I have a rotary table for a mill that could do that job.
You dont need a rotary table to do that in the mill.

Put the stock in a Jacobs, or Albrecht chuck and the tool bit in a vice. Center the top of the tool bit with the part to be turned with the unused axis and lock it down

Run the mill just like a lathe!
