Good luck finding Trail Boss. It was last reported to be under redevelopment in 2021 and was never released in 2022. Current thoughts are that it may never come back. On that note, I know a couple of members here had some and I've offered to buy it publicly but never heard back.

Yeah, thanks, I just talked to Jerry's Outdoors here in Tulsa and learned the same thing about Trail Boss. Sucks!

I do not think you can get to subsonic with H4895.
You can get a very reduced load though.
I have a load that is very sub sonic using Red Dot powder.
664 fps with 100gr cast powder coated lead 18" barrel.

That round is stupid fun Zero report through a "can".
Go long ways through a possum.
Punch right through a 2x6.
I made this load to see how low i could go reliably and make a great bug out load because you DO NOT need to ever resize the brass case.

Yea that is correct the neck stays the same diameter.
Lee .3cc scoop of Red Dot powder.

Now something a little more powerful can be made with the same powder.
I use 11.5 gr in my 22" 30-06 with a Lee 170gr cast gas checked bullet for 1476 fps.

No fillers are used and accuracy is great.
CCI200 primers but it probably does not really matter.

Some people want a bulky powder so they do not double charge the case.
I never understood that.
If you are paying attention to what you are doing and you are not high or drunk you should not have a case that is double charged.

A couple other powders that I have used for Sub Sonic is Bullseye and Blue Dot.
There is a lot of Blue Dot info out there for .223.

I used some just the other day in .223 with 50gr v-max in a bolt rifle 4 gr of it.
Pretty quiet but not sub sonic.. just a tick above.
3gr Red dot in .223 with 50 V-max was sub sonic.

All bolt action rifles.

From Hodgdon as you may already know this.

Take the maximum H4895 charge listed and multiply by 60% (.6). The load may
be adjusted up from there to achieve the desired velocity and accuracy.
This works only where H4895 is listed. DO NOT use in a cartridge where H4895
is not shown.

I've been wanting to load up some Hornady SUB-X bullets in 30-30 or .303 Brit. I'll be watching this thread to see what you guys are doing.

The reason for bulky powder is case fill. With less powder in the case, there is always the chance of incomplete or zero ignition of the powder. Think of aiming down on a very cold day. there is the possibility that the primer will not ignite the powder.

I have held the muzzle up and down and seen no difference with the fast pistol powders.
When I first began using Red Dot I used Kapok fiber as a filler and I have even used cornmeal on top of the powder.
I found no difference in accuracy so I eliminated that step.

If you want some Kapok fiber you can usually find it in the old red around the neck life jackets.
Those had bags of Kapook fiber in them.
A little goes a long ways.
