Yesterday a friend who's been checking up on me after my surgery,,,
Dropped by to say hello and show me what he bought his son for Christmas.

It was a very nice Crossman .177 pellet rifle that he bought at Academy Sports,,,
It's a break-barrel style with polymer stock and a 4X scope.

We took it out in my back yard to give it a little bit of a workout,,,
I mean, we had to test the functionality of the rifle,,,
And check to see if the scope was zeroed,,,
Didn't we?

I had a piece of cardboard with some green army men hot glued to it,,,
We paced off 25 yards and sat in lawn chairs,,,
Passing the rifle back and forth.

The scope wasn't even close to zero so it's a good thing we tested it,,,
But after about 15-20 pellets we had it spot on,,,
Popping those little green men every shot.

We playe,,, eerrr, tested the rifle for about an hour,,,
Shooting up about half a tin of pellets,,,
And had an absolute blast.

All for about three bucks,,,
That included the bag of soldiers.

So now I'm thinking I need to build a large pellet backstop for my yard,,,
And buy myself a decent rifle for myself to use come spring.

I seriously don't think I'll give up on shooting rimfire guns,,,
I have a membership to a nice outdoor range,,,
And over 70,000 rounds of ammo.

But that range is 45 minutes away from me,,,
And I would definitely enjoy being able to shoot in my yard.

Perhaps I should buy two rifles,,,
So I can host some shoot-outs at my place.

Several years ago a neighbor got a bit freaked out,,,
I have two Daisy Spittin' Image BB rifles,,,
They look exactly like Winchesters.

The neighbor called the County Sheriff on me,,,
Thinking I was shooting a real rifle.

When the Deputy got here he was pissed off,,,
Apparently he didn't like his time wasted.

It got a bit tense for a moment there,,,
But I wasn't breaking any laws,,,
So he had to go away mad.

But after having so much fun with that Crossman,,,
I'm seriously thinking I should just do it,,,
Build that large pellet trap/target,,,
And buy a pair of rifles.

He paid $79.95 for the Crossman he got for his son,,,
I did a bit of searching on the web for different high quality air rifles,,,
And came to the conclusion that I don't need to spend any more than he did.

That little Crossman was nailing army guys at 25 yards,,,
Which is just about the limit if my yard.

Just a whimsical thought for some fun times,,,
I'm nicely retired and have nothing better to do than play.

Go for it and get you some of those Battleship targets so you and a buddy can go at it!
That's not a bad idea,,,
Those two girls sure had a blast shooting theirs.

When I was a kid with a Daisy BB rifle,,,
Me and the neighborhood kids loved our plastic army men.

We would go to the "ditch" we played in,,,
Set our men up in various positions,,,
And play "war" as we shot 'em.

That's why I had that cardboard with them hot glued onto it,,,
They make a challenging target for rimfire at 50 yards.

A few years back I bought a pink Daisy for a little girl,,,
I bought plastic African animals and dinosaurs,,,
We had fun playing "safari" in her back yard.

But those Battleship targets would be a lot easier,,,
Pretty certain I saw some of them at Wal Mart.

Thanks for the idea.

Thanks rickm,,,
I just checked them out.

They have a nice selection of break-barrel rifles,,,
They start at $99.00 so thanks very much for that link.

I know that I have a tendency to go "overboard" on things like this,,,
So I need to be careful to not go crazy and order some $250.00 pellet rifle.

The one my friend bought would be perfectly adequate,,,
I mean once we got the scope dialed in it shot well.
I think he said he paid $79.95 for it at Wal Mart.

I just remembered,,,
I have over $150 in Cabela Bucks.

So much for Cabela's,,,
Their prices are way too high for me.

I'm in no hurry to buy one,,,
I'm going into town tomorrow so I'll check out,,,
What is available at Wal Mart, Atwoods, and Academy Sports.

That's exactly what I hope to do,,,
Have a friend over for a six-pack and trigger time.

Beer and Fiery-arms don't mix,,,
Beer and pellet rifles seem okay to me.

I've seen some recently with "silencers" on them that may be more appropriate for the urban range time. I have no experience with any of them to compare sound levels, but hopefully someone can chime in with a comparison. I know the pba raptor pellets and a shot of wd-40 down the barrel makes my daisy break-barrel sound like a 22lr... oops!
