Yeah I'll email my dad and get the link to a guy that actually did a but of research on it. He has a bunch of references and such. It's not that it was really the origin of christmas, but more the origin of how it is celebrated today.

I can come up with hundreds of references on this fact (no offense to your dad). It doesn't matter buddy. You'll never change anyones mind around here.

I was always under the impression that the gift giving was just a carry over of various non-christian celebrations that took place around the same time of year (including New Years), that "influenced" how Christmas is celebrated today.. I highly doubt modern Christmas gift giving can be traced to something as specific as beggars in England. It has more than one influence, to tie it to something that specific doesn't seem quite right. It may have been one of them, but I highly doubt it's the only one.
