Try finding a recycling place that'll take it. Here in Tulsa, there's an outfit called Earth Ecycle (part of the United Recyclers of America) that will take ANYTHING that plugs in or uses batteries. They strip the items of all salvageable or recyclable materials, including the plastic and metal, the copper in the wiring and windings, and even the precious metals on the circuit boards.

If you were here in Tulsa there is another place called Borg Metals that will pay you scrap for it. Try to find a recylcing or metal salvage place like perplexed said. If you attempt to take it to the dump, not only will they charge you but most likely they will want a certification that all of the gas has been removed.

Do you know if they recover the refrigerant, too?

Here, but occasionally There.
I found this on what I think is the city's website. I googled "Oklahoma City appliance recycle center" and it was a site with the following regarding "large item pickup:"

"Is there anything special I need to do with an item for bulk pickup?

Not really. You'll place it in your usual curbside trash spot, but the city asks that you put it out no more than 3 days before the bulk pickup so that your neighbors don't have to stare at it for long. Special arrangements must be made by calling (405) 297-2833 for appliances containing freon. "

You might call that phone number and see if there is a way you can drop it off at a time other than on "big trash day." However, having said that, when I went to take a washing machine to the city dump, I was charged something like $30 to $50 to drop it off.

Just sayin......

I think Tulsa hauls them off for free (and PSO then pays you a credit if it was working at the time they it picked up). I imagine your city utility service has something similar, as Terry mentioned.
