I texted my Representative who did some quick digging; this is what he came back with:

"It was a sergeant asking the sheriffs to disarm before entering the upper gallery in the senate chambers. No one is allowed in either chamber to be armed unless u are capital hwy patrol.
Not a new rule. It's never been an issue before. "

So, he's not aware of a particular senator who asked. Since this is an annual event it makes me wonder what has caused them to change behavior. Why start enforcing this rule now, after they have arrived? Being a scheduled event they could have told the sheriffs ahead of time they were going to enforce the rule.

I don't have a clue, but what authority does the Sergeant at Arms have over anybody? Is that person commissioned, and is that person allowed to carry?

That info is a bit tough to find online, but here's what I found:

http://www.oksenate.gov/legislation/glossary.html

Not sure if it's an armed position or not, but they are responsible for security of the session.

Sergeant-at-Arms - an officer of the Senate or House charged with maintaining order and carrying out the directives of the presiding officers or the members.

All you Internet tough guys. I'm certain Jerry could, although it might be closer than he thinks and if we are talking about multigun disciplines, then I'd put even money on myself. Still though, I originally said 90%. I didn't say I was the best shooter in the history of the planet. And besides, the point wasn't about how good I am, it was how poor 90% of the LEO's out there actually are with handling their weapons. Don't turn this into a pissing contest.

Guys Doc and I are good. My reply to him was a bit tongue in cheek. :)

The SAA info is very vague as far as our question goes.

I'll bet they are not CLEET certified officers, and just Sergeant at Arms in name only.

Appointees or Regular Ok Gov employees?

Found this. I suspect this is what our SAA duties might be:

The formal role of a Sergeant-at-Arms in modern legislative bodies is to keep order during meetings, and, if necessary, forcibly remove any members who are overly rowdy or disruptive. A Sergeant-at-Arms may thus be a retired soldier, police officer, or other official with experience in security. In recent times, however, the positions have often become quite ceremonial in some countries, with actual ability to eject members not necessarily being a primary requirement.

Dennis Baker to Serve as House Chief Sergeant-at-Arms

...The duties of the Chief Sergeant at Arms include attending all House sessions and helping maintain order on the floor, as well as overseeing the operation of committee rooms.

Most importantly, the Sergeants often serve as the unofficial face of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, interacting with the public and directing traffic flow within the building.

“Without Dennis and the other Sergeants-at-Arms, the basic operations of the House would be far more challenging and far less enjoyable,” Steele said. “I greatly appreciate everything they do to make our government work for the citizens.”

Baker worked for IBM as a service manager until his retirement, and later worked as a substitute teacher in the Vo-Tech system. He has worked as a House Sergeant since January 1998...

Only recent reference I could find is from 2011. Not sure if he is still the SAA but my guess is non-LEO position.
