I only support the death penalty in cases where there is absolute knowledge that the person killed the other with intent, first degree.

I won't lose a minute of sleep over this POS's demise.

Here, but occasionally There.
The condemned man had the benefit of YEARS of a trial and representation by attorneys. This is a system put into place by men in government so as to afford the criminal "due process." What due process was afforded his victims? What attorney was there at the crime scene to advise the perpetrators or defend the victim?

The Bible also teaches that we are to follow the laws of government, but do you really think that God will tolerate those that have knowingly and willingly aborted unborn babies? Was there any "legal representation" and appeals process available to them?

Perhaps we should go back to firing squads and hanging.

Oh, and for those "chastising" Christians, how do you know the people to whom you are writing are Christians?

So is the desired outcome of the death penalty "attainable"? Seriously. Is it working as a deterrent? Is it accomplishing our goals as a society? (I used to be a hard corp proponent of the practice, but I'm no longer convinced)

I don't get how a rational small government proponent can rail against government involvement in so many things yet turn around and say that the government is competent enough to be given the ultimate power. If someone wants to explain it, I'm really all ears.

In my opinion, the problem isn't so much the judicial system or the current state of the government. The true deterrent to crime and truly benefiting out nation lies completely in our parental system. If everyone didn't get a trophy, the difference between right and wrong instilled in our children, a hard day's work ethic and genuine concern for your neighbor was focused on; we wouldn't need the death penalty. However, we know this doesn't happen and for those who don't understand how to be a decent human being and not torture and murder their fellow man, they get the death penalty. We shouldn't set them free or banish them to become someone else's problem, they should be sent to be judged by their maker.

I find it amusing when people who support the wholesale slaughter of babies try to take the moral high ground when it comes to executing criminals. Not that it applies to anyone here in particular, but just watch, those people will be all over TV soon enough.

I'm not the big supporter of execution that I used to be, I think being confined to a cell for the rest of your life with nothing but the religious text of your choice is a much better punishment. But as long as we are going to execute criminals I think we should use hanging or the firing squad.

But it's ok to shoot an unarmed, raped, tied up, 19 year old girl any other day of the week?

There's a huge difference between murder, a self defence killing, and retributive killing. You're committing a logical fallacy by bringing up the first two when I'm decrying the third.

For someone who served in the military this seems rather hypocritical....

Not really. At least one can argue that the intent of the military is national self-defense. Policy decisions and utilization arguments aside.

No one can argue that the death penalty, after the fact, of a individual in-custody is self-defense.

Vengeance, Revenge, Reckoning? Sure, I guess. But I think stripping them of their identities and casting them out is a better solution.
