Not so long ago, there were laws forbidding the sale of alcohol in public establishments; only private clubs could do so. Recognizing the state of the law, a certain establishment organized a private club; for the princely sum of $1, one could become a member of said club, and thereby purchase alcoholic beverages. This arrangement passed muster before the scrutiny of the law.

I therefore propose a solution: bakeries (any anybody else who sees fit) establish a "wedding club," with membership restricted to those who the leadership deems appropriate, and who pay appropriate dues. At the leadership's discretion, of course, a coupon toward services may be offered to members; it might even approach the value of the first year's dues.

Just a modest proposal. A Gedankenexperiment, if you will.

Great idea. Here's a few signs for your business.

You say "the government" with derision. The same government that allows for all the freedoms we enjoy. The government that had seen this country grow to be the richest country in history. But, when it's suggested that the government may have played a part in the success of a business (a business that would not exist without the government...

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard you say. Even worse than the time you argued with your own quote.

Sometimes you say some stuff, and share some info that makes me have to think and research what you claim. This is not one of those times.

You say "the government" with derision. The same government that allows for all the freedoms we enjoy. The government that had seen this country grow to be the richest country in history. But, when it's suggested that the government may have played a part in the success of a business (a business that would not exist without the government, think about that for a minute), it's "oh hell no!" like that's some kind of socialist thinking. But, don't fret. We are not talking about raising taxes. We are simply saying that that business is not allowed to discriminate for certain reasons. It's clear you have no real concept of what it's like to be discriminated against so it's really a moot point.

The only success I've had in business is when the government has not stood in the way. Government has NEVER assisted me in business, especially when in highly government regulated businesses. Government limited my choices, practices, customer base, and employees. Deviation from the foregoing would have put me out of business and could have locked me up. Government doesn't allow anything. Government can only get in the way. Sometimes it is constitutional and justifiable, but mostly it is unconstitutional and unnecessary.

Nothing regulates business better than free market forces. If anything made this country the richest in history, it is the free market. If someone feels discriminated against by a business, that's an opportunity to open a business and cater to those who feel they are being discriminated against. Every business succeeds because it fill a niche and/or a need, not government forces - except when government threatens to infringe upon a business and public support overwhelms any government threats and things like the sales of M855 ammo go through the roof, and pizza parlors are given close to a million dollars in financial support from the private sector to rebuild their business.

To be liberal is to live in a cloud of delusion fraught with fantasy, and a disregard for the law and fair play. Alas; clear fact, unambiguous consensus, scrutiny, and researched reason does prevail and keeps me in touch with who is who, what is what, and explains why I am conservative. B.E.Wood

Ace,

The government we created doesn't have the power to disallow our rights and freedoms, so how can it be said to allow for these things when it has no power over these things to begin with? This isn't semantics. It is the plain truth.
