It's the only tried and true method to ago a deer. Unfortunately I am not a believer in aging deer on the hoof with any absolute accuracy.

Out of curiosity, what is the oldest age of the known (or estimated age) deer you guys have taken? What was the rack and body like?

My dad took this buck on a draw hunt this year to put meat in the freezer. They pulled in jaw at the check in station and aged him at 8.5 years. His dressed weight was 96lbs.

As we pulled away they laughed and said, "let us know how he tastes." So we decided to just grind him into chili meat and hope we got all the vericose veins out.

thats interesting. that guy dont look that old. What part of the state did he come from?

I thought i read they are not that accurate at aging?

It was two park rangers that were aging it and they both agreed on the age. I don't have pictures of the jaw though.

If you're talking about the park rangers age, they were two older gentleman. They also said they found a deer that had died that was 11.
