OKLAHOMA CITY – Federal officials say that a 23-year-old Oklahoma man has been arrested after allegedly planning to blow up a bomb in downtown Oklahoma City.

According to a criminal complaint, the FBI arrested 23-year-old Jerry Drake Varnell at 1 a.m. on Aug. 12 after he allegedly attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van he had parked in an alley next to BancFirst in downtown Oklahoma City.

The complaint alleges that Varnell initially wanted to blow up the Federal Reserve Building in Washington, D.C. with a device that was similar to the one used in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

300X250

Court documents claim that Varnell was upset with the government, and his plans got the attention of law enforcement.

An undercover FBI agent posed as a person who could help him with the bombing.

According to the complaint, Varnell identified BancFirst as the target, helped assemble the device, loaded it into a van and drove it to the alley by the bank.

In fact, officials say that Varnell even dialed a number on a cell phone that he believed would trigger the explosion. Authorities say they also found a statement that he planned to post to social media after the explosion.

However, officials say that the device was actually inert and the public was not in any danger.

“There was never a concern that our community’s safety or security was at risk during this investigation,” said Kathryn Peterson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oklahoma. “I can assure the public, without hesitation, that we had Varnell’s actions monitored every step of the way.”

Varnell is charged with attempting to use explosives to destroy a building in interstate commerce.

“I commend the devoted work of the FBI and our state law enforcement partners in ensuring that violent plots of this kind never succeed,” said Mark A. Yancey, United States Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma.

If convicted, he would face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison.

He is expected to make his initial appearance in an Oklahoma City courtroom on Monday around 3 p.m.

The OKDF is a civilian volunteer organization dedicated to providing for the common welfare and defense of Oklahoma and its citizens.

It is the belief and goals of the Oklahoma Defense Force to be responsible and active citizens of the state of Oklahoma. We encourage all to inform, educate, and train for any situation that may arise. Whether it is political in nature, a disruption to the infrastructure, civil unrest, a natural disaster in a community, need of service by friends, family, or an acquaintance, to assist Constitutionally-minded Law Enforcement when needed or anything that should arise around us, we will be there to help.

One of the goals of the OKDF is to be a common voice for groups to come together for the betterment of Oklahoma. We see the need to prepare and train with those willing to do all they can, when they can. This includes all groups willing to work in conjunction with the OKDF and their willingness to work together for outreach in the communities and a commonality in Oklahoma.

The common goal of the OKDF is the continual work to gain and maintain a knowledge base, a uniform structure to inform, teach, train and assist those in the State of Oklahoma. This will include any foreseeable and unforeseeable instances within the political landscape, Personal Preparedness - including Food and Water storage, Basic and Emergency Medical knowledge, Communications (Local, State, and National), and Defense (Personal, Home, Local Community, and State).

Natural and man-made disasters and hardships are an ever-present threat to us all. We will be available for any and all needed instances when presented to us. Groups working with the OKDF will be able to come together to aid whenever the need should arise, whether it is inside Oklahoma or to another State - i.e. Joplin Tornado or Hurricane Katrina. The need for assistance will be made available to Citizens, Rescue Teams, Law Enforcement and Local Government as it is requested or required. This will include any possible need that can be met from within any group - i.e. medical, food, water, or security.

The OKDF will work in unity with other groups to come together in unison for the better of Oklahoma and the citizens of our state. Each group will maintain its own sovereignty. We will work together to be the commonality that reaches out to the public, that maintains a structured platform for those on the outside, and that gives each group a place to work from if they so wish.

So, another "useless idiot" sting where a guy with zero capability gets contacted by an FBI handler posing as an sympathetic enabler...who then holds his hand through the entire process right up until detonation time. Then they spring out and say gotcha!

Did they stop an attempted bombing or did they create live theater at great taxpayer expense?
