So, you expect the people who would subsidize the people who can't afford the food to sit in a restaurant full of stinky people? Who could possibly have seen that idea failing?

FWIW, I used to go by Panera every now and then to get bagels for work. They make pretty good bagels, and their sun dried tomato cream cheese is awesome. It's like a really thick cream of tomato soup.

My wife is extremely compassionate to the poor/hungry, but so many on the street corners are actually not poor or hungry
Hehe, no kiddin' ... :D

Back when the "will work for food" signs first got popular ('80s?), a guy called in to a Dallas talk-radio show. Said he'd been trying to hand folks a can of beans all morning, and no one would take it.

I went to Dallas with a friend, and there was one guy on a street corner with a "will work for food" sign. Behind him (maybe 50 yards?) there was a business with a "Help Wanted" sign in the window.

And finally... back when I still had the farm ('90s), there was a guy in Denison with one of those signs. I could've actually used some help for a few days, so I pulled over and asked him if he wanted to work. He said no, he had a friend that could get him a job...

Apparently many (most?) of 'em just want free cash.

Thats, pretty much been proven......One of the OKC tv channels interviewed and did a little investigative background check and found some made pretty good money getting donations on street corners. One guy was bragging about it.

I heard a radio interview with a street corner pan handler a few years ago, she was saying it was hard work standing out there.

I wanted to tell her that work produces something, standing there may be uncomfortable, but it's not work.

Doesn't make a whole lot of sense operating a store like that in a predominantly Democrat area, they like free things-and they got it for awhile. And as usual, ruined a good thing.

Here, but occasionally There.
With regards to the street people, two things.

First, friends of our are in the horse racing business and decided once to go to the Jesus House in OKC and offer a job to a couple of the folks there. They were going to pay them $100 for the day for them to clean out horse stalls and replenish bedding. None of the people there were interested at all. They commented that "why should we work when we can get all that we need right here at the Jesus House."

Second is this from John Stossel. It is something of a lesson on the mentality of the homeless.

First thing I noticed about the failed stores, that they were all in overwhelmingly Democrat strongholds. I think it would be interesting if someone like say, Chic-Fil-A conducted the same experiment in overwhelmingly Republican strongholds to see if there was any difference. :anyone:
