I don’t use drugs other than occasional caffeine and alcohol, and I don’t have any desire or plan to.

I support legalization of all drugs. Government has no business telling free men what they can or can’t put in their bodies. Secondary effects of drug use on society are no justification for imposing the majority’s will over the individual’s free will.

But if my kids ever use drugs, they’ll come home to find a switch in my hand waiting for them.

Can’t agree with you here. So you’re saying that a drug like meth ought to be legal? One of the biggest secondary effects on society is the rampant crime that goes with it. I can’t abide with that.

I can’t say I never did cause I have when I was right out of high school and a girl I was dating liked it but what I can’t figure out is why guys are on a public gun forum arguing about they think it should be legal when they clearly know they can’t own firearms if they have a card. Don’t get me wrong if it was federally decriminalized then feel free to do what you want we’re grown men but I drink get up and go to work every day sometimes work 80 hours a week I don’t drink and drive stay home when I do or the wife drives but I work with guys that smoke and they all miss work and are late constantly I just don’t see it being productive BUT like I said were all grown men and it’s none of business what they do

And this is one of my BIGGEST problems with marijuana... it frequently destroys all motivation.

But hey, to each his own, right?

That may well be the case for some of the new kids on the block, but those options didn't exist when we started developing all our current crop of homeless. Especially with returning service members.

I’m a right-libertarian minarchist. I believe prohibiting the possession and use of illicit drugs falls way outside the legitimate purposes of the state.

People have the rights of liberty and property (AKA the pursuit of happiness) and that includes personal possession and use of any substance, even if it ruins their life or kills them. Use of a substance in itself does not violate the rights of any other person (assuming the user is not pregnant), so the state has no legitimate interest in that choice.

In terms of the practicality of legalizing drugs, I’m willing to accept increases in crime connected to repealing laws that punish behavior that doesn’t violate the rights of another. If we repealed all such laws, I believe people would have more opportunity for wealth, health, safety, happiness, etc., even if there was a general increase in crime. However, I reject the idea that legalizing drugs would result in a permanent increase in crime. It’s just as likely that criminal sanctions drive drug trade and use underground, causing much of the associated crime, as was the case during alcohol prohibition and marijuana prohibition.

People should be discouraged from using illicit drugs because the prevailing outcomes are negative. Drug use should be socially unacceptable. The community (not government) of anyone addicted to drugs should be ready, willing, and equipped to help them overcome their addiction. When people harm others while under the influence of drugs, they should be punished. But I believe government coercion to not use drugs is wrong, doesn’t work, and does more harm than good.

if you want to bring up service members, then shouldn't we also figure out which way the addiction travels? Are they addicted because of the weed or do they do the weed to deal with other problems, like PTSD?
