Any recommendations on the best ammo (commercial) for a 10.5“ 5.56 SBR? I was looking at the 75gr Hornady TAP, however all the places that sell it require proof of first responder. (I am not) Let me know any other options I should be looking at.

Thank you for your help.

When H&H sold Hornady ammo to only LEO(which I was) I was told it was because Hornady was selling it to H&H at a reduced price and it was only meant for law enforcement. Had nothing apparently to do with trust or lethality or anything like that.

That very well may be the case, a lot of companies used to, and still do, run special discounts for LEO, I just thought that one gentleman’s specific site was oddly listing very specific groups of people

to clarify: I have NO problem giving vets or any other military members or first responders discounts, they don’t get paid enough as it is

Considering 99% use their rifles for plinking or light game, and yours being an sbr which means pretty much only fun, just run whatever you can find. I’m personally a velocity whore, so I like fast bullets. I happen to have a safe full of 70 gr tap barrier, but that’s what I’m issued at work. I’ve run tons of different kinds of ammos over the years on sbrs, and I always go back to 64 gr or less due to the velocity loss with heavier bullets. A 10.5 is going to lose roughly 400 fps from a 16, and when you’re pushing those 70+ gr bullets barely over 2000 fps, you’re really lacking energy and diminishing the ability of the round. The tap stuff does run a bit hotter in a sbr, but I run it because that’s what I’m given, not because that’s what I chose. Prior to, we had the fbi 62 gr ammo which was sub moa and very hot, but it was soft point so only meant for flesh targets and sucked at ranges over 300 yards or for penetration. If your goal is a flesh target inside of 200, those 62 gr fbi or 64 gr speer gold dot LE rounds are great, and online retailers get them all the time to resell. They run hot enough to do severe damage even through light armor or walls, but don’t over penetrate like a fmj or barrier blind round. If your goal is penetration and velocity, which is what does the damage, run something 55 gr so you can maintain 2500-2600 fps or more. There are also some very violent 45-50 gr bullets for light game that basically vaporize small targets, and have been known to defeat light armor plates (lots of videos on YouTube). I really don’t like running 70+ Gr in barrels under 14.5, but buy some random boxes online and do some accuracy tests, or buy some of the ballistic gel kits and see what works best for you. If you have a chrono, even better. When I had my lab radar and tested every round I bought and hand loaded, I was amazed how far off advertised velocities were, and how slow they really are out of most short barrels.

Sorry bro, but you might want to go back and check this info. You lose or gain about 25fps per inch of barrel. A reduction of 5.5" is only about 137.5 ish fps reduction in velocity.
For your "heavy bullet" comment I'll use MK262 with it's 77gr SMK traveling at the advertised 2750fps from an 18" barrel as an example.

18" - 10.5" = 7.5" reduction in bbl length
7.5" x 25fps = 187.5fps reduction in velocity
2750fps - 187.5fps = 2562.5fps
MK262 out of a 10.5" SBR is traveling at around 2562.5fps using the advertised base velocity for MK262. It'll vary but put a chrono on it to see the actual. It certainly isn't going to be moving less or barely over than 2000fps out of a 10.5".

M193 55g is moving at 3250fps so out of the 10.5", it's leaving at approximately 3062.5fps or less because the advertised velocity is probably for a 20" barrel.

BTW, as long as you're running a tight twist, like 1-7 or less, >70gr projos work just dandy. 77gr from a MK18 or M4 is very accurate well past 500m.
