If memory serves me, and it sometimes doesn't, when I got my first car in 1956, the tag stayed with the owner. Could be wrong.

You are correct. Grandma's tag was always KF 43 Dad's was KFF 96 and I remember the sheriff's KF 1.
I also remember one spread of years in the 60's the tag's next color scheme was either orange and black or red and white and was determined by the bedlam game.

Back in the 50s, they alternated each year from white lettering on black to black lettering on white. Green and white came later.

You can now get a free copy of your registration to keep in your vehicle. Last week when I checked, they were trying to charge for the copy. It is free now.

You will need the last 4 digits of your VIN, the license plate number and the house number of your street address.

They will email a .pdf file to print.

In 25 years of driving,
I have never, ever had an officer ask for my "registration".
I think its a Hollywood movie thing to ask for "license & registration".
For me it has always been "license & proof of insurance".

I always keep it in the car anyway, otherwise I would loose it. Then every few years I go thru & throw away the oldest papers.
California required it for years and Hollywood is in California so. And yes they would ask for it. Here is a vintage registration holder from 1950's.

With all the technology in the LE cars, even knowing if you have a carry license, why does this info not pop up when they type in your tag number? Seems like a do nothing waste of finding something for us to do to keep us stepping in place. JMO
