@16colt that is a bummer that you couldn’t find your deer, hopefully you will have better luck next time. This could happen to any of us here and I am speaking from my own experience.

I am curious how much did you have to pay the tracker for his service? I heard the going rate can be anywhere from $100 to $200 for tracking, and off course there are some trackers that willing to help and only accept gas money.

I figured Makeithappen would have been here with some good deer posts, but he hasn't been around since August.
Also, RidgeHunter would make an appearance around this time.

I'm still seeing bucks in small bachelor groups, and mostly between 8pm and 4 am. Spikes and younger deer at the feeder during shooting time. Lot of younger guys fighting.

Man, I missed alot today while driving home. Congrats to Kirk and Kenny!!! :thumb:

16colt, don’t beat yourself up about losing your buck, because if a person hunts enough and shoots at enough, it’s going to happen. Which tracker did you use? Like undeg01 said, those guys can usually give you a pretty good idea if the deer will survive.
Thanks.
The tracker I used was a young guy my sister knew. He had a two year old lab. He never did get on a scent any further than the last blood trail we had found the night before. Ended up doing big sweeps upwind for quite some time with no luck. He thought from the blood that the deer would not survive, but was not sure since there was such the lack of blood after he jumped the fence. Here are a couple of pics I took. I’m not convinced he’s dead.

First pic appears to be a considerable amount of blood but that second pic looks like pieces of fat. Almost looks like a low brisket shot to me.

Did you ever see him go down, or just run off?
He went down the second I shot him. Did a couple of kicks, then jumped up and ran. I thought he was hit hard the way he instantly dropped.

If that's the extent of the blood that's hardly anything. This buck had 3 arrows in him. First shot was high and dropped him, he started dragging himself off so I put another through him. He made it to a brush pile and a was tangled up so I got down and put another arrow through him. I left and went back to the truck to go to the landowner's house to give him some time to expire. Came back later and he was gone. Tracked him for couple hundred yards and lost blood. Found him the next spring about 3/4 mile from where he was arrowed, and about 100y from where we quit looking for him the next day. This was pre-dog use unfortunately.
