I built a plinker load for my Mossberg 100atr bolt action rifle. Kicks like a .22 mag
Shot #1 went 1381 FPS.
Shot #2 went 1411 FPS.
Shot #3 went 1402 FPS.

1 and 2 were perfect horizontal and 3/4" apart.
Shot 3 was shot by a friend and went high right between the 2.. group was about 1.25"
at 100 yards.

Now the load if you are still reading.
FLS R-P brass, cci 200 primers. 11.5 gr. Red Dot, Bullet is a flat nose 30-30 150gr,, old stock that was .307" ID.
Yes .307" but i have shot those in my .308 against the newer style .308" and Zero difference was noticed.

If you want a cheap plinker load this may work for you.
I also shot a 172 gr gaschecked lead bullet with this load and it kicked the same.. Nice load.

No case filler needed. I did not use any either.
I had some other loads I shot that were not plinker loads.
I shot them in necksized brass( .307" neck ID) this time and accuracy was not as good as my full length sized cases that have .306" neck ID
Non plinker 168 gr 2904fps 155gr 3025 fps, velocity was measured 20 feet from barrel.

I really want to try some stuff like this to make some small game loads for my model 94 30/30 and my 1898 krag sporter 30/40. I think be neat to see if I could make some light loaded light bullet loads and make them accurite enough to be useful.

Get a few projects out of the way then I can start tinkering at the bench again....

I used a slow powder in my model 94 30-30 it was H4350 and almost a compressed load it went 1800fps
Well 18?? fps with neck turned cases it would almost touch the first 3 together at 100 yards. That was a 172 gr gas checked bullet.
Which is what the above post 1 should read 172gr gas checked. I will try and fix it.

I have not shot anything slower than that yet in my 30-30

Try TrailBoss for plinker loads. Fluffy enough to put a large volume in your case, just don't compress it with the bullet. Compressing changes the burn rate from what I've heard. I've used it in .223 and .45-70 with good results. Accurate 5744 also makes a good pllinker load.

My .30-06 plinker load for my .30-06 is a 170 grain .30-30 CoreLokt bullet over 16 grains of TrailBoss. I don't have a chronograph, but it should be about 1300 fps. My dog is a little gun shy and I carry this setop when we're messing around in the woods.

I had a puppy years that high tailed it to the barn when we went out to shoot for the first time.
I chased that terrier 300 yards back to the barn before I caught it.

It was shaking and scared. I carried it back into the woods and sat and waited for a small bird to land so i could shoot it.
I shot one while holding the dog.. I walked over to the bird still holding the dog and sat beside the pile of feathers..I pulled out the breast and gave it to the dog.
Now I have the dog's full attention and you could not pick up a gun after that without that dog following you.

Maybe there are some kind of earmuffs for dogs if the crack is too brutal for your dog.

The light .30-06 load I use or a cast .30-30 load at about 1500 fps don't bother her as much as the sharper crack of a .22 LR. I also have a .243 TrailBoss load I use sometimes. After deer season I plan to load a cast load for my .44 mag carbine to try. There's lots of coyotes on our place and the Indian land we prowl around on, so I just need enough gun to stop a 'yote if needed. She is a dachsund/terrior cross, pretty small and got chewed a little once before I broke up the skirmish. Now she thinks she's a wolf hunter.
