A friend of mine saw one with a cub crossing the road about 1/2 mile from my house, about 4 years ago.
Average weight is 200 lbs............ 9mm will do the trick. My son carry's 15 rounds of 9mm coated 147 grain Truncated cone when hunting in SE OK.
Around here when hunting we just carry a twitch for them thar bear.

Throwing a shoe is completely effective against black bear. Most adult bear in new areas are really pretty small. Like 130-150 lbs

When I was planning to go bear hunting in May (which ended up not happening), I had intended to take a 357 for bear “defense”.
There are documented cases of .22 rimfire killing bears. Not the best choice but it has happened.

Most are urbanized bears with people taking out the trash at night or walking pets that startle them and get an attack. Hikers also sometimes get between momma bear and the cubs which will also trigger an attack. Grizzly's and polar bears on the other hand consider humans as food so that is a different story.
I carry a 10mm with Underwood 200 grain hard cast when in any bear country.

LIke the idea of being prepared for anything though. We are talking about bears not velociraptors though...
