A 6 foot tall retaining wall will carry a significant amount of back loading.

Good on choosing concrete.
Research proper 'base' requirements, I'd bury the first row of blocks, and absolutely review the geogrid placement and length (into hillside).
The geogrid will be a CRITICAL element to your wall strength.

Edit: And your research will show the wall should have a drainage system built into the wall base. Rock and piping, wrapped in fabric. It's going to take a lot of rock. SO much rock. Holy smokes it took a lot of rock.
Just buy it by the dump truck load.

Good luck!

I'm just now finishing up my 4' tall x 50' long wall.

Get some quotes first. Then gage if it's worth doing yourself. It's WAAAY more work then I thought it would be.

I should have hired it out.
Seriously - get some quotes first.
