speaking of salt plains, anybody been out there lately? Its almost dry during wet years, I'm wondering what it looks like now.

Been by there everyday for the last few days checking traps, it's come up a little, still about half dry, but more than last month. Spring fed ponds around are full, sloughs and marshes around the lake are still dry. The river above the lake has a little water, Sand Creek still dry.

Got this a minute ago in the regular WD email. Don't look to be getting any better anytime soon.

Canton - Zone 1: Water level is 9.25 feet below normal. Habitat conditions are poor, no flooded vegetation around the lake. Winter wheat around the area is in poor condition. Duck season is closed. Goose numbers are low. Hunting activity is low. Hunter success is unknown. No movement of birds into area since last week. The northwest portion of the lake is dry, and the only usable boat ramp is at the Canadian Campground day use area.

Sorry for the hijack, but if any of you folks fish Atoka Lake, looks like OKC might be pulling it down also. Lake level normal is 590 and as of today sitting around 577. Lots of bare ground when the lake is that low...........

The rain had barely stopped in OKC and the call from OKC went out to the USACOE office at Canton lake requesting the water release. The water release is to begin tomorrow and will last until 30,000 acre feet of water has been released. The estimated water loss due to wetting the river bed is 15,000 acre feet or 1/2 of the total release. IF all of the 30,000 acre feet is released from the lake then the lake will have a maximum depth of 4.5 feet. This 4.5 fow will be sitting on the top of all of the organic sludge in the bottom of the lake. If the lake does not receive any appreciable rainfall this spring then the lake will experience a major fish kill this summer. How do I know this??? This same thing happened to Great Salt Plains Lake. How? The wind will pick up on Canton this summer causing the organics to be brought to the surface with all of the wave action allowing an algae bloom to occur. The algae bloom will suck all of the oxygen out of the water and cause an irreversible chain reaction in which many or all of the thousands of trophy walleye, sand bass and catfish to die. ODWC estimates that it will take 7 years for the lake to recover if this happens. The walleye rodeo will be cancelled, no tourism for Canton and surrounding merchants and NW Okla residents will be in trouble for lack of drinking water.

The 15,000 acre feet of water that makes it to Lake Hefner will only last 15 weeks before OKC is back where they started from..........in trouble. Wait a minute......they are not back where they stated from because now there is no Canton water to fall back on, zip, nada, nothing. Water rationing is unenforceable, so that does not help any. Mandatory water rationing should have started last Spring and continued until sufficient rains refilled the lakes. So drink up OKC and do not try to conserve any water cause the OKC Water Utilities Trust indicated this week there was plenty of water. Hmmm, if there was plenty of water and we were not to worry, then why did OKC call for water today before the rain stopped???????????? Think about it.
