I agree with either the Tikka or the Howa. Both are excellent rifles. Some of the others mentioned are good beater guns, but just not the quality of the Tikka or Howa.

You talk about the .308 for versatility. Why not get a 30.06? Same versatility as it uses the same bullets, with a tad more oomph.
