I'm listening to a podcast of Clark Howard from 2-21-12.
He's talking about electric cars and the road tax.
Since you don't buy gasoline you aren't paying road taxes (yet).
Guess who is against this?
The states and the feds (big surprise).
I think they have a point, you are avoiding (not necessarily intentionally) paying road taxes if you drive a 100% electric vehicle.

I think they are trying to add more on to the tag every year.

What about if you build your own or convert a gas one... then they'd have no way of knowing it was electric.

If they do that, gas natural customers will be looking at the same thing.
There probably is road tax when you buy at a commercial fueling stations, but you can buy a home filling station too.

I would guess on factory electric or cng it's probably on the regitration some where.
On a home conversion I dunno.

The government is the one driving electric car production, even when it's unwanted.

They could start by removing the $10,000 subsidy for buying an electric car.

They are looking at supplementing road taxes with a mileage tax as another method of getting the money. Not just because of electric cars, but also because of more fuel efficient cars. They will try to legitimize it based on its fairness, when all they are trying to do is to continue to drive a change to people's driving habits. I believe they have already began investigating doing this in a trial study in Washington or Oregon.
