I am no computer dude - what exactly is a bot, what do they do, and what is their purpose? are they good, bad, or neutral?

I think it could be referred to as a computer generated "robot." Kind of like an artificial intelligence creature running around and hitting websites with some purpose in mind that the "creator" has determined that needs to be done.

I've had LOTS of "image views" at my Smugmug photo site and have wondered if it was bots that were visiting rather than regular people. However, according to the people at Smugmug, they are actually people visits and not bot visits.
