you didn't mess around as a lawman in your revolver days. I like it

It was 1990. The Glock 17 had just started gaining momentum on the LE world, as was the Beretta 92F and Sig P226. Myself and my captain both wanted to make the switch to autos, but our crusty old chief said, "nope. Wheelguns only. I don't trust those damned Dick Tracy guns."

So I asked him does it hafta be .38/.357 caliber? He said we could carry whatever caliber we choose, as long as we can qualify with it. I went with the 4 inch 629, my captain chose the 6 inch 657 in .41 Magnum. I qualified with a 92%.

But holy hell did my forearms ache for a week after 50 rounds of full house magnum loads!

My 12 year old grandson watched Dirty Harry a couple of weeks ago and was inflicted with "The most powerful handgun in the world", and "Do you feel lucky punk" fever........ We popped into H and H this morning and I rented the 629 and let him experience shooting 44 magnum...... From the expression of joy and the "I got to get one of these" looks he was giving I am confident PaPa will be in the market for a shiny new Smith and Wesson real soon!

Pepe, you do know that Inspector Callahan used light specials in his Model 29 don't you?

Well, that sounds fishy to me. Light special loads would hardly "blow a man's head clean off".

See Magnum Force. When the traffic guys asked him what kind of a load he shot in the 44, he replied 'light specials for better control and less recoil'.

Those Smith's are beautiful pistols, but won't handle full house loads very long and if you load real hot loads, they will likely come apart.
If you want a fire breathing monster, look at the Ruger Super Redhawk. Not sure one can load one hot enough to make it come apart, although I'm sure somone had done it. There are idiots everywhere.
Not sexy looking, but it is built for real magnum loads.

Heck yeah. Good for you and him. Looks like a blast. Just don’t mix up the numbers and buy a 329! Goodness, I don’t know that a sequence of numbers has ever mattered so much.

I had a S&W lightweight revolver in .44Sp that kicked like a mule. It was like a J-frame with the big hump back on steroids. Can't remember the model number...maybe a 296?

I really liked that gun but it was a handful.

I own a 6" S&W 629,,,
But I rarely ever take her (Jezebel) out.

In actuality I just don't like shooting her,,,
she's a gun that I would never have bought for myself.

Many years back my best drinking buddy gifted her to me,,,
Her father had passed away and I helped her inventory all of his 100+ guns.

She said it was his favorite pistol to shoot at the range,,,
But after shooting a half a box of rounds,,,
I decided the gun wasn't for me.

Besides, I don't like spending dang near a buck per trigger pull.

A few years back I stumbled on 250 rounds of 44 Special ammo at a garage sale,,,
It was ridiculously cheap so I bought it all on the spot,,,
I own a Charter Arms Bulldog so it made sense.

I fired some of that ammo through "Jezebel" and was pleasantly surprised,,,
Without that brutal recoil it was actually a hoot to shoot.

I do drag Jezebel out every now and then for the same reason you did,,,
To give some young or new shooter that Dirty Harry experience.
