It was 1990. The Glock 17 had just started gaining momentum on the LE world, as was the Beretta 92F and Sig P226. Myself and my captain both wanted to make the switch to autos, but our crusty old chief said, "nope. Wheelguns only. I don't trust those damned Dick Tracy guns."
So I asked him does it hafta be .38/.357 caliber? He said we could carry whatever caliber we choose, as long as we can qualify with it. I went with the 4 inch 629, my captain chose the 6 inch 657 in .41 Magnum. I qualified with a 92%.
But holy hell did my forearms ache for a week after 50 rounds of full house magnum loads!
