Glock 19/23/30/32/38 (all roughly the same size), XD 9 or 40 Service or 45 Compact, XDm in 9 or 40, or M&P. Choose the one model that fits for hand best.

Then decide your caliber. I own a XD Service .40 but if I was buying over again, it'd be a XDm 9.

Another vote for G19 because ammo is easier to find and practice with. G23 if you have to have a larger caliber.

Any full size Glock will do. I shoot the 34 regularly (the barrel and slide are a little longer than the 17 or the 19), but also have a 17 and a 19. All I could recommend any of them as a good beginner gun.

My favorite of them all is the 31, but the ammo is kinda pricey so ... it only gets played with every once in a while now.

Have fun!!

Go to H&H and fondle lots of things that look good, then when u find a few u like, rent them or find a friend with them and test em all out to decide exactly what caliber u wanna shoot.

Small piece of advice. After you get your uber-killer handartillery, go buy yourself a good .22lr semi or revolver an have fun shooting. You'll be glad you did.

Ruger Mk II or III, used. 22s are fun and cheap to feed. learn your fundamentals first before developing bad habits with a larger caliber.
