I get my maps at http://www.mytopo.com/. They're not terribly expensive, and you can order custom coverage, rather than being limited to the stock quadrangles.

I order a GMU map from them last Thursday and received it on Monday.

And to answer the original question, I use a Garmin Rino 530. Color screen, ability to upload additional maps, FRS/GMRS radio, weather radio, barometric altimeter, electronic compass (think flux-gate compass, not just telling you what your track has been), and it'll send your location to compatible Rino users. I love the thing.
