We're looking to give our son a long gun or pistol for his 22nd birthday. He lives in AZ. Is it okay to next day air it to him directly since it is a gift and not a purchase?

Absolutely not okay to next-day air it to him,,,
Any time the gun crosses state lines it must go through a FFL (Federal Firearms License) dealer.

You can have the gun dealer you bought it from ship it to an FFL dealer in AZ,,,
Your son can pick it up there and fill out the federal form 4473.

Please do not commit a federal felony.

Yeah, I'm going through the same thing with my son. Heck, I've even got a gun that already belongs to him, but because it's a transfer of possession, it too must go to a FFL in his state.

I'd like to know when and why the heck we decided it was any of the federal gubment's business to tell us exactly how we're allowed to exercise our 2nd Amendment rights.
