It was already a CCW state, but it was up to the sheriff of each county under 'shall allow'. Same as California. And just like in California, some sheriffs just did not like to give them out. I know,I have had permits in both states. The change in the law means the sheriff will still be where you have to go to get one,but if denied there will be an appeals process you can go thru. The good news it that most sheriffs will just probably go ahead and ok them to save money in their budgets from fighting appeals. And the permits will be for 5 years instead of the current reinstating annually. And Iowa will finally open up to reciprocity with other states and allow their permits. There will be more training involved though now too to get a permit, and the fees are going up. Still,a very positive move.

I live there now part time and have a business in Des Moines. I had a permit there before moving here, and it was damn hard to get. Polk county sheriff did not like giving them out. You really had to jump through a hoop to get one. When I bought a place in Oklahoma and then by maintaining my residence here long enough for it to be my primary address, I was able to get my permit here- but was never allowed to carry when there. Now with this new bill Iowa will finally also hopefully open up to reciprocity and then we can carry when there with our Oklahoma permits at some point.

“I am signing this bill because I believe there doesn’t need to be any conflict between the freedom to carry firearms and public safety,” . Not a bad comment from a Dem governor.

I like Culver alot better than Gov Vilsack though. My ex father in law used to play golf and socialize with Vilsack. The ex FIL was the GM of Prairie Meadows racetrack/casino in Altoona.
