Never heard of this 50 number before. I was a gunsmith and dealer for 20 years and I had to pay it from the very first one I built. If an FFL dealer sells 1 receiver and 1 parts kit in the same transaction they have to pay the excise tax. Maybe 50 would make the tax liability high enough for the GOV. to go after them.

The rules are different than you stated.

I don't think it's the cost of it, I would say it's the paperwork and having to follow the atf rules that they may have an issue with.

Ive looked into it and it honestly doesnt seem that bad as far rules go. Yes it shouldnt be as complicated as they make it. I just dont get why people want to sell guns that much. There just isnt that much money in it in my opinion. I had an amazon business back in college and I had items that I was making 30% mark up on. Guns youre lucky if you get 10-20% on. I can make a lot more money selling cords on amazon which is what I did on there.
