Please don't spend $50 on the IHC windage knob in the link above, when you can purchase an SA sight pinion (with elevation knob) for only $20 - $30. This is the part that you actually need to replace. I believe that the elevation knob caps run about the same cost a complete pinion assembly on eBay so you might as well replace the entire piece if that is the case.

Perplexed will give you the right answer once he views this thread. He'll be much more knowledgeable than I on the rear sight assemblies.

CHL is on the right track, but prices have gone up. The part that's missing is known as the elevation drum; a few years ago, you could find those loose, but the supply seems to have dried up. I used my last one last year to repair a T105 rear sight, which I believe is what you have (it is not a national match sight, btw). Unfortunately, the drums cost as much as a whole rear sight pinion, so you might as well buy the pinion. A Springfield pinion works just as well as any other, and will be a bit less expensive, but $50 is about the going rate for those unless you get lucky and score something like this:

If you're not fussy about the pinion being correct for the SN of your receiver, then you can get by with the cheapest of the manufacturer-marked ones. Here are two links to post-war SA items offered by a known good supplier of those, with the NHC marked item being a bit more common:

If you do want it to be period correct, post the SN range and also pics of the halves of the elevation drum, showing the manufacturer's mark, and we can go from there. It does seem that the SN starts with 200K or 2M, in which case your rifle is a mixmaster, so any manufacturer's mark would work. Here also is a link to a step-by-step illustrated guide to removing and re-installing the rear sight; the guide shows a M14 clone, but the rear sight assembly is the same as on a M1 Garand:

Thanks Todd :)...and yes the correct term is drum, not knob or cap. I could not remember the word for the life of me when typing the previous post.

BTW OP...did you happen to purchase that rifle from GlockCop?

Thank You Sir. I'll just grab one, it's not a collector item rifle it's a nice shooter. Hope to run it at Pawnee at some point, just need to get behind it more.

Have you bought a pinion yet? One marked IHC sold this morning on the CMP forum for $25 shipped, which was a very good deal if you don't care about it not being correct for a Springfield receiver.
