You might be surprised what some IT guys find enjoyable on slow days.

I remember a really slow one where I once tried to figure out who each laptop and smartphone belonged to. This is pretty easy with iPhones that default to a hostname of "<user>'s Phone" where <user> is the username of the account that was in use when the phone was first synced to iTunes. (It's been a couple of years, so that may have changed... I'm not an iPhoney.)

They still default that way. You can update the name iTunes, but how many people actually do that? I think they believe the default name is cute.

I spent a lot of time on gun forums and watched some questionable videos. Not porn, just not work safe. I also sent some emails.

If they have a sophisticated IT infrastructure they would probably have blocked websites/forums that were forbidden by policy.

The emails wouldn't be a problem generally.

Sounds like the main problem would be if it appeared that you spent too much time indulging in those activities while on company time and/or using company resources.
I'm not sure that anyone here can tell you how much time is 'too much'

Many companies also have policies that state employees can not access the guest network. This can be seen as deliberately going around the company firewalls in place.

Why would the companies be worried about state employees rather than their own? Fun thread. I always figure, if you wonder if anyone can see what you're doing, you should think about what you're doing... :)

Even at my job in 2001 we audited the access from the guest network. The firewall logged to a specific priority on the the syslog server for that subnet.
Of course back then it was all 100BaseTX drops and not WiFi.

In my job now I don't handle network stuff... thank God!

Never disregard an employers motivation to do something. If they want to, they can find it. I've seen very little in the technology world that isn't trackable if someone wants to spend the money to gain the knowledge.
