I don't know the exact number of films Duke made. I'm thinking it was around 175.

However, he only won one Oscar, and that was for, my personal favorite, True Grit.

I think it's my favorite because he actually had to get into character for it. In almost every movie, he played basically the same type of cowboy/soldier. Tuff, rugged, respectful to women and the hero.

In True Grit he played a filthy, pitiless thumper, who was fearless yet flawed, and loved to pull a cork.

Denzel Washington is the same way. Now he and John Wayne are complete opposites, we all know that, but in most of his movies, he too basically portrays the same type of character.

Except for his portrayal of LAPD Detective Alonzo Harris in Training Day. In that film he switches his usual role as hero for one evil, cunning mean muthafuka. Also my favorite movie of his.

Back to John Wayne. Other favorites of his are...

Big Jake
El Dorado
Rio Bravo
The Quiet Man
McLintock
Donovan's Reef
The Cowboys
The Shootist
