You are correct. 922r says you have to have 5 US parts or 6 if the barrel is threaded.
Most people change out the FCG (3)
PG (1)

Stock (1)

What is the FCG and PG?

The handguards only count as one even if they are actually two parts.
You also can keep the great triggers the MAK comes with by replacing the magazine followers and floorplates with US ones for 2 more US parts. You must use these mags only.
That along with a US stock, gas piston and pistol grip would make you legal if the muzzle isn't threaded. If it is be sure to use a US muzzle device.

This is where your confusing me.

FCG (3 parts) + PG (1 part) + Stock (1 part) = 5 parts right? Why then would you "also" need a gas piston (now making a total of 6 parts) to make it legal to add a real stock/or folder and pistol grip in place of the thumbhole stock? Anyone? :anyone:

FCG = Fire Control Group (3 parts: Trigger, Hammer, Disconnector)
PG = Pistol Grip

From the looks of it, you're talking about the MAK90 conversion, and you are correct, you need 6 parts if you have a threaded muzzle. In the case of AKs you build yourself, the receiver counts as a US-made part.

In Glock Holiday's picture, the bottom rifle has a muzzle nut (not threaded, so only 5 parts are needed) and the top one is threaded with a slant brake. As Glock Holiday stated, if it is threaded, add a US-made muzzle device for part number 6. You could also use a US Gas Piston, Handguards, Magazine floorplate, Magazine follower, or even Magazine bodies. A fully US-made magazine counts as 3 parts.

That make more sense?

Here's 2 rifles I have in the cooker...

Your not supposed to count US parts. Your supposed to count non US parts.
The law states no more than 10 Imported parts are allowed on a rifle. who cares how many US parts you have if you have more than 10 imported parts on this list.
(1) Frames, receivers, receiver castings, forgings or stampings
(2) Barrels
(3) Barrel extensions
(4) Mounting blocks (trunnions)
(5) Muzzle attachments
(6) Bolts
(7) Bolt carriers
(8) Operating rods
(9) Gas pistons
(10) Trigger housings
(11) Triggers
(12) Hammers
(13) Sears
(14) Disconnectors
(15) Buttstocks
(16) Pistol grips
(17) Forearms, handguards
(18) Magazine bodies
(19) Followers
(20) Floorplates

True, but in the case of the AK you're either dealing with 15 or 16 parts total, depending on whether the muzzle is threaded. So in the case of the AK, you need either 5 or 6 US made parts to be legal, and its easier to list the US parts than the imported parts.
