DOG SHOOTS MAN
Carissa Roberts Reporting
[email protected]

Sheriff Steve Kozisek identifies the man who suffered a gun shot wound on Monday morning as 46-year-old Richard L. Fipps. The Sheridan County resident was on Murphy Gulch Road accompanied by Mr. Murphy and another employee when they stepped out of the truck to remove the snow chains from the vehicle. Fipps had a dog in the vehicle which he had ordered to move from the front seat into the back. While the dog was roaming around the back seat of the truck, it stepped on a loaded 300 Winchester Magnum which caused the gun to discharge. According to Kozisek, Fipps was outside of the truck when the bullet shot through the cab of the truck into Fipps left arm.

Fipps was transported from the scene to meet an ambulance on Highway 14, where he was then taken to Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Due to the severity of the injury, Fipps is now in Billings. Although his life was saved, Fipps arm may be amputated.
Kosizek explains the evidence and testimonies from witnesses point to an accident and not an intent to harm. Upon initial response, the incident was thought to have occurred in Sheridan County, although on scene it was determined the incident was 400 yards in Johnson County.

Previously Reported by Justin Wolffing:
Monday at 10:43 AM, a call came into Sheridan County's dispatch center regarding a man who had suffered a gunshot wound. The man was transported from the scene of the incident, Murphy Gulch Road, to Sheridan Memorial Hospital via Rocky Mountain Ambulance. Initially both Story Fire and Goose Valley were dispatched but later recalled. New information indicates the incident actually happened within 400 feet of the Sheridan County line in Johnson County. Johnson County Sheriff Steve Kozisek...
Kozisek says they will have the rifle involved in the incident in their possession by the end of today and additional information may be released by tomorrow. At this time, he is unable to release information as to how the man suffered the wound. Sheridan County Sheriff's officials had spoken with the individual as of 1 pm Monday and stated that it appeared no life threatening injuries resulted.

Let your dog do what he wants and he won't shoot you!

Something similar happened near Snyder, OK several years ago. loaded shotgun in trunk with excitable bird dog. Dog causes discharge, blows up spine of young hunter in the back seat.

Just the beginning of a long, sad story, but there should be a lesson in here someplace . . . .
