Ok, we picked up our meat this morning, and the math in the previous post was all wrong. The actual hanging weight was 764#, and we got 398# of finished product. The actual cost per pound is $5.55/lb. Last year’s was $5.62/lb.My brother and I did the math on what this year’s steer is going to cost per pound of processed meat, and according to the yield percentage on last years, it should cost $3.25-3.50 per pound. The steer weighed 1190 lbs, and we estimate we’ll end up with around 350 lbs of meat each.
The owner said he normally sell 3-5 calves per month for slaughter but has sold 87 in the last 60 days. The media’s meat shortage prediction has been great for this guy!
