if you are use to plated or jacketed bullets, lead does just smoke more, I've not had the leading issues you have but I now only shoot lead outside and load plated for inside. Same load 200gr SWC with 4.2gr titegroup, but the plated bullets are so much cleaner and almost no smoke by comparison.

I've had several people swear their barrels were clean, but a soaking in copper solvent produced the telltale "green."
J&K is right, no matter how clean it looks, ALL the copper has to be removed before shooting lead and vice versa.

From J&K:

The amount of crimp should just be slightly more than what is required to take the "belling" out of the case.

What J&K wrote about crimp is important. You don't need to crimp the snot out of lead bullets. If you do, you'll end up with an undersized bullet that can affect accuracy and maybe leading as well.
