i have done a lot of research on this subject and have opted for an 870 in 20 ga. w/ an 18" barrel and use #3 buck. this is the optimal setup for home defense IMO

I am looking for a self defense shotgun. I would like to keep it around $250. I want wood furniture ext shot tube. Summit Gun Broker has a Mossberg riot gun 8 shot for $200. And CDNN has a Charles Daily 5 +1 shot 18 1/2 barrel for $180 was $274. I would like to get one that I can put choke tubes in or have it fitted to choke tubes. I have a Remington 870 that I guess that I could buy a short 1812" barrel for.
I know where a sweet li'l Hi-standard Riot gun is....

I like the idea of a 20 gauge, since recoil is more controllable for someone who doesn't shoot shotguns a whole lot, and less ballistic energy isn't a huge concern at 7 yards. How hard is it to find 20 gauge buckshot? Do they have it at Academy?

The Mossberg 835and 935 3 1/2 mag guns have an over-bored barrel and slugs are never to be used in them.I think that is where the myths about screw-in chokes came from.
