Ear plugs may be the way to go. I had a set of molded ear plugs made at the last Tulsa gun show and they work really well. They actually block out more noise than my old pair of ear muffs.

I'm going with ear plugs too ... When I worked at H&H I tried out every single pair of hearing protection they had looking for something that wouldn't get in the way when I was rifle shooting. Even them slim ones still got in the way with me. I use the little orange plugs you can get anywhere. Had a custom molded pair at one time and they worked well ... I just lost them somewhere ... but the little orange ones are just as good.

Go see an Audiologist! You can get custom ear moulds that have a compression fitting that allow realitively normal hearing when a shot is not going off. They fit flush in the ear and are comfortable enough to wear all day.
