CW "Mover" Lemoine interviewed an F14 RIO who had to punch out on a carrier landing when the arrestor cable broke, and he talked about using one of those to cut away the parachute lines while in the drink. He said they'd had problems with them firing unexpectedly, so the riggers started putting a couple of wraps of tape on them to keep the blade closed. That seemed like a good idea until you're in the ocean with wet fingernails and wet tape trying to get ahold of the end of the tape so you can unwrap it...all while worrying about the silk filling with water and dragging you under...

Supposedly, there is a design flaw in them.
The knife is not supposed to be the automatic. It's supposed to be the cord cutter, and if you think about it, what good is that little automatic blade gonna do you in a survival situation in the jungle.

Then the release for the cord cutter is at the wrong end of the knife. I suppose that could be considered a design flaw. ;)
