Problem resolved. It was the bulb.
I took it to Video Revolution, the guy instantly said it was the bulb, they had the part in stock, they swapped it out, charged no labor, took my $200 or so [which is fair], and sent me on my way. I'll buy my next TV from them.
They said that the bulbs average 3 years service. Mine went five, and the bad bulb indicator light never showed.
