I picked up a fairly ugly Stevens 59A and spent about 7 hours on it yesterday. It’s far from complete but I figured I would share. I had to remove the old finish from the stock and the rust (the bore was already like a mirror.) I refinished the stock although it still needs to be sanded and stained a couple more times. Reblued the barrel and receiver. Tonight I’ll do more work on the stock and polish the bolt. It’s been a fun little project. The old yellow wood is the before picture and the words on the barrel is after the reblue.

I messed up two rifles before I got it down.
I’ve not done a whole gun, just some parts, but you can always strip the messed up blue and redo it. A little more work on getting all the oil from fingerprints before rebluing, may be all you'd need. Or you might need to do a much better job of surface prep. Or in my case, one of each. Was many, many, years ago, so a bit shy on details now.
