I don't know how short they are, but Angie Debo wrote a lot about Oklahoma history and American Indian history. She made a lot of enemies among the big names in the early days of statehood, because she told the unvarnished tales and named the names...

Thanks guys, lots of great suggestions. He went with "Where the Red Fern Grows", mostly due to the time crunch he put himself in.
He's seen the movie, should help fill in the blanks of speed reading the book.
