Can you tell a parsed down version of the story? Handgun or longgun? What kind of crime? New or established poster? Age? I saw a dateline or 20.20 recently about a guy that did had this happen on Armslist.
I would refuse to sign a bill of sale, too. I'll offer my ID for the seller to look at (never been asked for it). I've been here 8 years. If you want to stalk me down before selling to me, it's plenty easy to find out about me (especially once I give you my name in a PM). I do it to potential buyers.
If I'm selling a gun to someone here, I need to see they are established. They don't need 8,000 posts or been here for years or anything, but I need to see that they actually participate in the shooting sport/hobby. Pretty easy to tell. I'll also people search, adress search, OSCN search, etc. If my guy instincts are wrong, I'll still know who I sold it too and the details of the transaction if the cops come knocking.
I online dated for ~6 years. I don't get surprised by people I meet online. I can get creepy if I need to. Lawl.

Thats alright, I no longer own the 2 guns I bought new through an FFL...
Here's the shamefully brief version:
- I bought an AR-15 new.
- I sold the AR to a well established member here (I won't reveal his name, but he's no longer here, and currently in prison).
- The next day the AR was used in a crime, and was left at the scene.
- The gun was traced to me in two ways: (a) original buyer paperwork--the feds tracked it down and had a copy of it that I saw, and (b) my fingerprints were on the gun.
- Naturally, the feds had some questions for me.
- They thought I was lying during all the initial questioning (and it was a lot). I had no idea why I was being questioned, for a long time. It got quite scary.
- Once they determined I was telling the truth, and told me what was actually going on, things relaxed a bit.
- In the process, I learned some interesting things about how they were tracking the classifieds on this and other forums, and tracking specific people's buying/selling behavior.
- The moral to this story: protect yourself because you never know when the butterfly effects will come back and bite you.
