I was at a local fishing lake two days ago, and got into several real nice eating size bluegill. I was a kid the last time I ate perch. My parents would drop me off at the same lake and I'd walk the banks with a little black bug type fly behind me and catch the perch like crazy. Some were only 5" long, but as long as I cleaned them, Mom would cook them. Didn't know anything about filleting back then, so we just scaled them, gutted, and cut the fins, head and tail off. Mom cooked them in bacon grease with no breading. Made the skin Crispy, and it was good as I remember it.
Brought home four of the biggest, so they are going into the skillet tomorrow in bacon grease to see how they turn out.

If you like to get into some good action, this is the time for some bluegill.

We brought home 29 keeper sized perch yesterday and 8 channel cat, weighing about 4lbs each. Caught the cats on the same tackle and baits as the perch. It was a thrill when you hooked one of those! About every 10th perch caught was a nice cat. My kids loved hooking them and fighting them with the ultralight perch gear we were using. Only had 1 break off. It was definitely fun!

Awesome ^^^^^, I caught an 18" saugeye and a couple of 8" Kentucky's in the same spot on a 3" brown trout rapala for bait. Bedding area for all I guess or they were in there to feed on the smaller perch.
Going back out with the fly rod when the boating idiots that show up once a year get off the lake. An 8" bluegill puts up one heck of a fight on the fly.

I just bought my fishing license in about 15 years, : ) some friends and me are going to the Blue river to camp. You can camp free there if you have a license, so then I decided to go fishing, went to Walmart and got some tackle and am ready to go. Where would a be a good lake to start?

Just about any lake in your area will hold bluegill. Look for shallow coves with a sand or gravel bottom. If the water is clear enough, you can see their beds which will look like circular depressions on the bottom.

Went to Lake Elmer this morning, found a bunch of little bluegill and one fairly big one. Using worms and a bobber a couple of feet deep close to shore.
Couldn't find the really big ones.
