The GOP is going to have to be progressive on some social issues. If it does not, our descent into socialism will be hastened by continuous Democratic rule.

I'm hoping when you wake up in the morning you'll re-read these two sentences and recognize it for the nonsense circular logic that it is. Avoidance of or slowing our "descent into socialism" is not served by becoming "progressive on some social issues," it only serves to advance the socialist cause. It's as nonsensical as being "a little bit pregnant."

Not really. It is the inflexible and rigid positions on women's rights, gays, and immigration that have alienated a lot of Americans. Keep your nose in America's bedrooms and keep demonizing minorities, and you'll keep losing elections. The last election cycle ought to prove that to you.

But hey, just keep on keeping on and eventually you'll be a modern day Whig.

Dennis, the GOP lost the last 2 elections and stands a good chance of losing 3. Either soften your stance or become a minority party.

john mcain and mitt romney were softer centerist, gop needs a strong conservative candidate. you dont beat the left by becoming left

True the group that did not show up in their usual numbers to vote last time was the conservative voter. After Romneycare and his stance on 2A he could not get the base to really support him. Same for McCain, the base just did not trust him and still does not. There is a move against him by the conservative of AZ going on right now.

The "strong conservative" candidates out there are one reason the youth of the nation lean left. Mainly due to social issues like gay marriage, an inability to improve the immigration process, and the overall "take our bal and go home/with us or against us" attitude. The Republican Party is holding on to old issues while their young constituency is growing left. It's not that young people want to be liberal, but some of these deep seated stances on important social issues are why the dem base is growing young. The Republican Party doesn't need to ditch conservatism, they need to evolve into a modern party and grow with the changing constituency.

There's only been one casualty in the war on women, and that was by Ted Kennedy.....
Ted can swim!

It's all BS to me. RINOs and "moderate" Rs want to get closer to the middle - to what end? Ds and Rs both want control, soft Rs will continue same globalist economic policies, Israel-first war policies, and treat illegals like all is well. Ds continue their usual socialist path, and at least have the guts to publicly state that they don't respect individual liberty.
It really ain't gonna make much of a difference for too much longer, I really believe.
So many folks (mostly Rs) won't vote for the candidate based on principles, only for the lesser evil they believe has a chance to win.

Actually most of us would vote for the candidate with the right principles, we just have not found them yet.

How can you not see the difference between modernizing on social issues and being more conservative on fiscal issues and the last couple Rs that were conservative on social issues but moderate on fiscal issues. That is the worst of all worlds no wonder they lost.

The social issues essentially don't matter!! So why not move forward and you can cut the knees out from under of the socialist opposition. Be conservative on the issues that really matter and more moderate on the issues that don't really matter.

Why would any right minded individual want to soften their stance on illegal immigration? They are criminals.

No other country in the entire world allows illegal immigrants into their country without criminal penalties. WITF should we be any different?

We don't need to be across the party lines. We need to take a stand against the people that wish to allow illegal immigration into our country and vote them out of office at the least, and preferable tarred and feathered, and rode out of Washington on a rail!

My thoughts exactly.
