Yes, manned aircraft can "drone" for hours on tedious watch and wait missions but drones make much more practical sense for many mission - especially long-endurance, low excitement missions like long-term surveillance or Search & Rescue or border patrolling (which is a variant of long term surveillance). Flying certain missions, that can be performed more efficiently by drones, by unmanned (or remotely piloted if you prefer) aircraft keeps much more valuable and skillful human-in-plane pilots out of harm's way and available for missions that truly require an on site human.

Manned aircraft could do everything everyone is proposing. Drones would not have to be used to monitor wildfires...manned aircraft already can.

From a general aviation standpoint, I'm a bit apprehensive about the see and avoid capabilities of these things once they turn a bunch of them loose outside of the MOAs.
