Long way to drive.

Multiply by 20 to get an idea of how long to walk. Have fun.
Yeah and I think even that would be optimistic.

I'd probably stay put. Plenty of stuff here. Find a body of water and hunker down.

Wal-mart sacks? Ha. I'm going to be the richest man alive after SHTF...
Target sacks are better and stronger!

I don't know about stockpiling... but I do know that 3300rds of 22lr fits nicely in a 30cal ammo can if you dump it all in.

I also know that it will wear you out if youve got a dozen such containers to move.

It doesn't have to be something as dramatic, long term or widespread as a nuclear war or a zombie infestation. New Orleans descended into medieval chaos in only 3 days.

Good point about Hurricane Katrina. There are lots of scenarios that could result in such chaos--storms, earthquakes, terrorists, etc. Everyone should be prepared for that kind of trouble. But I don't know how much any planning would help with an extinction level event like astroids hitting the Earth, etc. More likely, such things would just be luck of the draw as much as anything.

Every pay day I buy 100 rounds of each caliber I own. My family still has land about and hour and a half southeast of OKC and a natural source of water. That's our rendezvous point if the SHTF. Mangesium fire starter, filter straws, iodine, TP, collapsible fishing rod, water, and a few other things are in our packs.

I have limited supply and support (in terms of interest from my family) in the "SHTF" thought process. And it is very difficult to acumulate items without the support of a spouse. However, It amazed me the interest I got shortly after the ice storms of late or when the power goes out during a storm. I point to the needs during those situations as reminders of what we needed as a family.
Ammo and firearms are all welcome and needed for extreme situations. However, formula, dipers, water, batteries, etc, ( while not exciting) are just as important. I start with the needs for a few days and move up as possible.
Also, the art of living small is the real key. You can stock pile allot, but in long term..... May God forbid.... you have limits. Learn to live on and with less. Knowledge is power and the ability to know your area, your neigbors, how to start a fire (silly but some may not know) etc. This would give you the power to adapt.

Well stated, urbanscout, and I agree that it's difficult to accumulate items when those around you don't share the same view or ideas. You made some really good points about things that are necessary such as baby items for those who may have an infant.

There is some very good thoughts being posted here. I suggest that any food you stock be food you will eat. MREs and all are great but not something you want to eat at most mealtimes, and if you do not eat them chances are they will just sit where ever you stack them and go bad.

You can keep some long term storage food, but the main things I suggest are like the chunky soups, canned chicken, rice, beans, etc. Many have at least a 2 year shelf life and you can make some tasty meals from them. While I love to mix a can of Ranch Style beans with some white rice, the wife is not that crazy about it. A can of chicken mixed into a packet of Knorr Chicken flavored rice and a can of green beans makes a good meal and is easy on the stomach if you are a little under the weather. It is cheap too. These are the kinds of things you can look for on sale and buy a couple extra without breaking the bank.

As far as firearms, I would add the shotgun next followed by a good 22 rifle. The shotgun will let you defend your home or can be used to hunt any game you likely to run into.

And yes guys this topic will never go away. As long as there are people that worry about their family it will keep coming up. Which is why it should have it's own section. :D

That's one carb heavy meal. If your not active and burning calories that will do nothing but add fat to your mid section. White rice is one thing I'd leave out of my food storage. It's been so bastardized by the time they are done with it no nutrition value is left. Have the beans, add some chicken, skip the rice. No since in going into a SHTF deal all fat and obese.

I was wondering about all the carbohydrates as well. It's good to have a high-carb diet if you're active but otherwise, it will do nothing more than slow you down.

On the other hand, the cans of beef stew and chili is a really good idea. They have long enough shelf life that you could stock up on them for fairly cheap without having to worry about something going bad.
