I plan on reloading for it if I decide to keep it. I have fired the revolver before and if the rifle is the same or a little less then I should be ok.

I have seen a lot of them for sale used with 16 live rounds to go along with it. Seems some guys fire 4 rounds and have enough. This was not a single occurence.

I know it's going to be a beast. I have shot one in a 45-70 and it was stout but manageable. I do plan on getting a nice buttpad for it before I fire it.

Just a suggestion, a 45-70 kick is like a hard push compaired to the 500's wicked sharp kick! best idea would be like compiaring a 243 to a 300WM maybe a 2 3/4" 20ga to a 3 1/2" 12ga.

You can shoot it and hang onto it but I find it was NOT a bench rifle at all. Might want to ask D&T about a muzzle break :thumb:

Don't mind me I'm a wuss when it come to rifles that kick ya hard but I'd like to hear your thought and a range report with target pics is a must! I wanna see those big holes in the paper or a hog your choice :thumb: Later,

Kirk

I don't know if it has more recoil but it seemed to be sharper if that makes sense? the 45-70 pressure in modern stuff should be in the 40K and the 500SW which I had to check is 60K so it's a higher pressure round and normally higher pressure rounds have a sharper recoil curve than the lower pressure stuff.

That Sharps rifle I shot was shooting black powder 405gr on top of 80gr BP and while it didn't kick hard it tried to push you over, the 45-70 I shot in the Marlin rifle would crack you more than try to push you over and the 500SW Handi would just kick the crap out of ya! like an above post I've seen several Handi's for sale in the 500 with several rounds so I'm sure they were like me and just didn't like the recoil. The pistols I like to shoot but the break they have does an amazing job and the weight of the pistol do an amazing job of dropping the recoil to about what I thought to be a 44 mag.

Guys I'm not going to lie I don't like rifles that kick so you might be fine this is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth. Later,

Kirk

I had to put a muzzle brake on my H&R in 500 S&W and managed to kill several deer, hogs and a black bear with it. I loaned it out a couple of time and other guys have killed deer and hogs with it...

Like Kirk said though, recoil is S-H-A-R-P and that is what makes it uncomfortable to shoot, especially when you are trying to develope a load and you run several rounds through the gun in a single session. A muzzle brake though, does make it quite a bit more comfortable to shoot...

After just over 500 rounds though (532 to be exact) the barrel was so loose in the frame that I would not shoot it anymore. I eventually "stubbed" it and turned it into a 219 Donaldson Wasp....

I had one in .500 and i shot it 3x and sold it. I really had no use for it other than to say I had one. I've also had one in 45-70 and it didnt kick hard at all. I miss that one :(

Hearing you all say that a rifle in 500 S&W is more harsh than one in 45-70 makes me wonder if a BFR in 45-70 may be easier to shoot than a S&W500 revolver.

I'd sure like to find someone with one of each to let me try out.
